Florida Keys 2008

Florida Keys Trip was a Success!

Last summer 18 RCLS 7th and 8th grade students and 2 chaperones attended MarineLab in Key Largo, Florida for a Biology Summer Camp.  Our group was 1 of 5 schools that attended this trip including schools from Iowa and Missouri that included 65 total students and 10 chaperones.  Our group left Minnesota on July 1 and returned July 7.  The trip introduced the students to a variety of marine ecology topics as well as taught the techniques required to conduct a scientific observation study.

Students enjoyed snorkeling in various habitats including the coral reef, sea grass, and sandy bottom areas.  A variety of marine organisms were observed including eagle rays, sea turtles, lobsters, sharks and coral reef among many others!  Thank you to everyone who supported our group to allow us to make this trip possible!

The following is a response to the experience by one of the attending students,

My time in the Florida Keys was AMAZING!  I saw so many things.  One of my favorite things to see was an enormous school of tiny fish.  There were millions of them.  It was so cool.  And there was a shark right under them.  Throughout my whole trip I took so many pictures.  The snorkeling and learning things about the ocean were fun.  But one of my most favorite things was meeting so many great people.  I made lots of friends and am keeping in touch with them!  I’ve always believed in God, but I never realized how much He cares about each and every creature.  It’s amazing!

Preparations are already underway in planning for our next trip in 2010!

God’s Blessings,

Mr. Rudzinski
